Damages caused by lightning can be classified in to two categories. A lightning conductor to protect a building or lives is generally known as external protection while the internal protection refers to the installation of surge arrestors to protect electrical equipment. Before installing lightning conductors it is important that a risk analysis is done to determine the risk level. Once the risk level is determined, the methodology of protection meeting IEC 6305 standard or NT17101 standard could be adapted.
Before selecting surge arrestors, it is important to analyses the risk of direct discharge or induced surge current and the type of sensitivity of the equipment need to be protected.
